Exciting News from the Loon Committee!
We’re thrilled to report that we now have a loon chick (loonlet) on Friends Lake (well, on the back of a loon parent on Friends Lake)! A couple of weeks ago, a loon was spotted on top of a tree stump by multiple kayakers. Since the incubation period for loons is about four weeks, the adults must have been setting up camp there since mid-June. Thank you to everyone involved for looking out for the nest and keeping their distance, and to all who helped with our lake clean-up to keep the lake safe for loons and other wildlife.
It’s critical that we all remember to keep at least 150 feet away from this new family.
Please use your binoculars and your zoom lens cameras to get a close up view, and be respectful of their space. The only predator the loons should be concerned about is the bald eagle! Learn more about a loon’s developmental stages. It will be exciting to watch this little one grow!
